Area of Study
Requirements for History Majors:
A Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree with a major in history requires thirty (30) hours in History courses. These hours must include a minimum of nine (9 ) hours of survey courses, drawn from at least three (3) of the following four categories: US: HIST 10603, 10613 (or the Honors equivalents 20603, 20613); Europe: HIST 10203, 10213, 10223 (or 20203, 20213, 20223); Latin America: HIST 10923, 10933 (or 20923, 20933); Asia: HIST 10943, twelve (or 20943, 20953. A maximum of twelve (12) hours (at any level) in any one of these geographic areas (Europe, United States, Latin America, Asia) may be counted towards the requirements for the major.
History majors must take a minimum of twelve (12) hours in courses numbered 30000 or above, and must take one History Major Seminar. It is recommended that students take the History Major Seminar in their junior year. The prerequisites for the History Major Seminar are completion nine (9) hours of survey courses and at least one course at the 3000 level. There are four seminars:
HIST 49963 B History Major Seminar in the History of the United States
HIST 49973 B History Major Seminar in the History of Europe
HIST 49983 B History Major Seminar in the History of Asia
HIST 49993 B History Major Seminar in the History of Latin America
Students must take at least twelve hours of the major requirements at TCU for graduation from this institution. History majors must also complete six (6) hours of foreign language at the 20000 level or above.
Requirement for History Minors:
A minor in history requires eighteen (18) hours. History minors must take a minimum of nine (9) hours of survey courses, drawn from at least three out of the following four categories: US: HIST 10603, 10613 (or the Honors equivalents 20603, 20613); Europe: HIST 10203, 10213, 10223 (or 20203, 20213, 20223); Latin America: HIST 10923, 10933 (or 20923, 20933); Asia: HIST 10943, 10953 (or 20943, 20953).
Three hours from HIST 10203, 10213, 10223 and three hours from HIST 10603-10613 are recommended, but are not required.) Students who complete the Honors Intellectual Traditions track (HHIT 10113, 20123, 20133) may count these towards a history major or minor in lieu of the European survey courses. History minors must also take six (6) hours at the 30000 level or above.

Special Cases:
Students who complete Honors Humanities 1114, 1124 and 2134 are exempted
from the 1003-1013 requirement, but they will still need to substitute
six hours of courses dealing with non-Western Hemisphere subjects for
a history major.
Students seeking Secondary Teaching Certification in History must have
24 semester hours, including HIST 1603 and HIST 1613 (U.S. History) or
HIST 1903 and 1913 ( Ethnic Elements of American History); HIST 1003 and
1013 (Western Civilization) and HIST 4743 (Texas History). Nine hours
must be at the 3000 level or above. Of this nine, no more than six can
be taken in WH or NWH respectively.
*Pass/No Credit Option may not be taken for courses to be applied to
the major or the minor.
