Why Study History? History is not the study of who did what and when, but rather the search for an interpretation of the past. Historians study documents and artifacts left by people of other times and places, attempting to understand these people on their own terms. As a central part of a liberal arts education, the study of history prepares students by developing their ability to think critically and analytically, to communicate their conclusions effectively orally and in writing, and conduct research in primary and secondary sources.
